Oregon Public Broadcasting is all run out of studios in Portland, and KOAC is now just a repeater station for that feed. The station first broadcast in 1923 with the letters "KFDJ", operating out of a hall at Oregon Agricultural College, now Oregon State University. In 1925 the call letters were changed to KOAC, showing it was a project of the college. In 1932, the station was transferred to the new Oregon State System of Higher Education and a new studio built, and in 1941 the transmitter and broadcast towers were built at the present location.
By 1950, there were five studios (Eugene, Corvallis, Monmouth, Salem and Portland) and a statewide network of transmitters broadcasting OSSHE. The network was renamed the Oregon Education and Public Broadcasting Service in 1971, and in 1981 Oregon Higher Education divested itself of all radio and TV stations, with the network reforming as Oregon Public Broadcasting.
This particular location is the only directional AM radio station in the United States which uses a shunt-fed antenna.
