All cytherean craters are named after famous women or female first names. Batten crater was named after Jean Batten a New Zealand aviator (15 September 1909 – 22 November 1982). Born in Rotorua, she became the best-known New Zealander of the 1930s, internationally, by taking a number of record-breaking solo flights across the world.

Batten's Percival Gull Six is on display at the Jean Batten Terminal at Auckland Airport. It was used to set two world record flights. In 1935 it flew a world record journey from England to Brazil and in 1936 it was used for a world record solo flight from England to New Zealand.
