Thomas Greeley Stevenson was a private in the Massachusetts Militia who had risen to the rank of major by the start of the Civil War. He was appointed colonel of the 24th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry on December 3, 1861. He fought in the battles of Roanoke Island and New Bern in North Carolina. He then served under Generals John G. Foster, Alfred H. Terry, and Ambrose E. Burnside. He was killed in Spottsvania, Virginia on May 10, 1864. He is buried in Mount Auburn Cemetery, Cambridge, MA.

A 96" by 33" bronze portrait of Brigadier General Thomas Greeley Stevenson was created in 1905 by Bela Lyon Pratt. The Civil War General is depicted in military uniform including a brimmed hat, knee length overcoat and sword in his left side. He is standing while holding a pair of binoculars with both hands at waist level.
