The museum is situated directly in the middle of an extensive and extremely massively built zone of the Czechoslovak defence fortifications in 1935-1938. Located in the immediate vicinity are a large number of various types of preserved fortress structures.

V letech 2009–10 VMK prošlo a prestavbou a stalo se tak nejmodernejším muzeem s tímto zamerení na území CR. V prostorné expozicní hale predstavuje formou prurezu historii ceskoslovenské a ceské armády, její spojence a neprátele v roce 1938, cs. opevnení, 2. svetovou válku, historii odboje a okupaci, vojenské osobnosti a problematiku obrany státu.
