In Eckville, within Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, is this cluster of flora and fauna signs.
Hawk Mountain Sanctuary is located on a mountain ridge northeast of Harrisburg, PA. From I-78, take the exit for Route 61 and head north through Port Clinton to the intersection with Route 895. Take a right turn on Route 895 and drive to the intersection with Hawk Mountain Road on the right. Drive on this road to the entrance at the top of the ridge. There are small signs to guide you on your way. After paying the fee, walk toward South Overlook. The station is near the destination.
The cluster is a series of stainless steel signs embedded in a rock foundation. I counted four signs. One sign says, "Forest and Fauna" and describes that the forest on Hawk Mountain was part of the Appalachian Forest system. There is an image that shows many animals and plants and a map showing the extent of the system. Another shows images of the wingspans of various raptors. Another, titled, "The Natural World," talks about the ecological web. Another, "The Migration," talks about bird migrations. Another, "Lay of the Land," is about the feature, River of Rocks.
At the major lookouts there are staff people looking for raptors. They are very approachable and will answer any questions you may have about the flora and fauna here.
Hawk Mountain Sanctuary is a on-profit member supported conservation land devoted to the study of raptors. At the time of the visit (fall 2014), raptors were in migration. A nearby board showed tallies of raptors seen that day.
