Records show the first city library was started by a Sunday school class in the Community Methodist Church in the early 1930's. The first official librarian was Vesta Bush in 1937.

A new library was opened September 2, 1944 in the former Burgan house one block south of the Bell Hotel.

The next library building was dedicated February 9, 1958. That building was a few blocks away from the current building at the corner of 1st Avenue SW and D Street SW. It was torn down to make way for the PUD parking lot. In 1987 the former Ephrata Fire Station became the Ephrata Library.

This is a nice library with friendly staff. There is a children's reading area. They have a summer reading program and other activities for kids. Computers are available.

The Friends of the Ephrata Public Library have an on-going book sale in one of the rooms of the library.

There is an outdoor reading area.

The building is officially called the W. Gale Matthews Library Building. It was dedicated June 17, 2009. Mr. Matthews used to loan books out of his personal library.
