This area was settle before the US Civil War by Thomas Carney, who is buried in this cemetery, which is along Carney Creek. The area became known as both Carney and as Pleasant Valley. There is a newer cemetery (ironically known as the Old Carney Cemetery, even though there is no newer Carney Cemetery) up on the bluffs over Flat Creek.

There is a smaller area fenced in with an old iron fence within the larger area with a newer fence -- the latter crushed by downed trees. Whilst it looks like there are about 5 graves here, FindAGrave currently only lists 3 interments at the First Carney Cemetery. The oldest recorded grave is from 1864, and the newest is from 1880.

Earliest Burial: 07/26/1864

Latest Burial: 04/18/1880
