The Gateway Arch as the centerpiece of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial is officially listed as a Lewis and Clark Visitor Centre, reminding of the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804-1806. Being 630 feet high, it is the tallest man-made monument in the western Hemisphere. Over 2 million people come to visit it per year. Underneath is a visitors' center with the Museum of Westward Expansion.

The Jefferson National Expansion Memorial is officially listed as a Lewis and Clark Visitor Center on the website of the National Park Service (visit link) .

Appendum: At first, we stated here that the Gateway Arch marks the starting point of the expedition since this is claimed in some of the sources given above. This seems not to be correct, please see YoSam's comment from 12/26/2014 about this issue. Thank you a lot for this useful information!
