This plaque is dedicated to
Mitchell’s Brigade in recognition of their service during the
Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. The plaque describes the action on Sept. 18 - 19.
Text on the plaque reads:
Mitchell’s Brigade.
Steedman’s Division, Granger’s Corps.
Col. John G. Mitchell.
Sept. 19, 1863. 7 A. M.
78th Illinois. | Lieut. Col. Carter Van Vleck. |
98th Ohio. | Capt. Moses J. Urquhart. |
113th Ohio. | Lieut. Col. Darius B. Warner. |
121st Ohio. | Lieut. Col. Henry B. Banning. |
1st Illinois Light Artillery, Battery M, | Lieut. Thomas Burton. |
In the evening of the 18th the Brigade marched from Rossville to the support of Col. Dan McCook’s Brigade , which had taken position on the right of the road facing south in front of this ground. It arrived during the night and formed in this position. On the morning of the 19th after some skirmishing with Forrest’s Calvary, the Brigade was ordered to return to Rossville.
