This kind of ghost towns are quite usual in the Portuguese deep countryside, in the most remote areas. The new generations, seeing how easy it would be to move to a major town, didn't hesitate, left, seeking for a better material life. Their parents stayed behind, willing to die where they were born. Eventually most of them did it, and some were later moved to senior homes. One by one they left. And the villages became deserted.

Rocha Amarela - which in Portuguese means "Yellow Rock" - is a good example of this process, although it's not in a such a remote area.
