Notre-Dame-de-la-Mer was built in the 12th century as a priory, which belonged to the abbey Montmajour. The original church of rubble had only a single-nave nave with three bays. In the 14th century a fortification wall with battlements and machicolations was built, so built a fortified church. As the place became increasingly important as a place of pilgrimage, the nave was extended by two bays to the west in the second half of the 15th century.
