This monument is dedicated to 69th Ohio infantry Regiment in recognition of their service during the Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. This is the only monuments to the 69th Ohio infantry Regiment on the battlefield. It marks their location on Sept. 17 - 18, 1863.



This monument measures 7' x 4' x 8'6" with a rock-faced double-step base and round-topped smooth-finished shaft. The face of the monument has a bronze relief panel of battle scene with unit identification in raised letters and state seal above. Sculpted acorns on the sides of the monument. The bronze relief panel on the front of the monument depicts the action at Reed’s bridge on September 19th, 1863. The panel shows the bridge crossing the stream. On one side Union troops are massed to force their way across. One man is show firing on the Confederates on the opposite side while an officer waves his sword urging his men forward, and third man has been shot. The Confederates are shown retreating from the bridges. The text on the monument follows.

The 69th Regiment Ohio Infantry
Lt. Colonel
Joseph H. Brigham, Commanding

Temporarily attached to Col. Daniel McCook’s Brigade, bivouacked the night of Sept. 18, 1863, near this place, which it reached at dark; and before daylight on the 19th, by order of the Brigade commander, the Regiment surprised the enemy guard near Reed’s Bridge, charging across, and setting the bridge on fire.

The Regiment was withdrawn in sent under orders to Rossville at 7:00 A.M. on the 19th, with the balance of the Brigade, and was not further engaged during the battle.

On the evening of the 18th, it participated in the capture of 22 prisoners in front of this position.
