In York, off W. King Street, is this statue of "Pal," a German Shepard who a local Marine had worked with during service.

The statue is located in a park strip along the creek. It is south of W. Market Street, near a paved path.

The statue is of a dog lying but alert and looking upward. The statue is made of bronze and is on a low concrete base.

There is a sign nearby that states:

"A Pal Remembered...

Reunited on a beach in the South Pacific, Sergeant Arthur Glatfelter of York, PA, embraces his beloved canine companion. Glatfelter enlisted into the United States Marine Corps following graduation from William Penn High School in 1942. One year later, "Pal" was enlisted in the Marine Corps "Dogs for Defense" program. At the time of enlistment, "Pal" was a four-year old pure bred German Shepard that had belonged to Glatfelter since puppyhood.

"Pal" completed over two years of active service as a Marine War Dog, during which time his conduct and performance were excellent. "Pal" saw a variety of combat experience, being used as a scout, messenger, stalker and pointer throughout his service. On May 10th, 1946 "Pal" was granted an Honorable Discharge for exemplary service to the "Devil Dog" unit and having risen to the rank of Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. Throughout their enlistment, "Pal" and his owner Sergeant Glatfelter were reunited in three separate happenstance occurrences along three different allied occupied beaches in the South Pacific.
