Of the thousands of hitching posts that once lined the streets of Victoria in the 1800s and the early 1900s, only three remain. This one, the only remaining post made of cast-iron, stands on the side of Menzies Street.
The design of this iconic hitching post was used as the template for the hundreds of modern bollards that dot the downtown area and line the Inner Harbour. Just a few metres from the hitching post are some of the modern bollards blocking the entrance roads to the BC Parliament Buildings.
To this day, horses from local horse-drawn carriage companies are hitched to this heritage post throughout the busy summer season. Signs mounted above the post specifically restrict this parking spot to "horse drawn vehicles only".
