This hospital staged its grand opening on July 17th, 1954 and has slowly and continuously grown since then. This is the major hospital in the BC Boundary area, serving a large area, though there are other smaller hospitals in the area.
A large and impressive bronze plaque commemorating the grand opening was unveiled on July 17th, 1954 by then Minister of Health and Welfare for British Columbia, The Honourable Eric C. Martin. Though the hospital has been enlarged and renovated several times in the intervening years, the plaque remains on a marble wall at the rear of the rotunda of the main entrance.
An accountant and stock broker, Mr. Martin entered politics and served in the Provincial Legislature of British Columbia from 1952 until 1966, representing Vancouver-Burrard as a member of the Social Credit party. Born September 15, 1905 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, he was educated in England and Victoria and, during World War II, served in the Canadian Army as a sergeant-instructor. Before being elected to the Provincial Legislature in 1952 he ran unsuccessfully in 1945 and 1949 in the riding of Vancouver Centre. While in the legislature, he served as Minister of Health Services and Hospital Insurance, as well as the ministry of Health and Welfare.
Eric Charles Fitzgerald Martin passed away in 1973.
One of the most recent additions to the hospital was opened in 2001. It was a new emergency entrance, the dedication plaque for which was unveiled on September 8th, 2001.
