This monument is dedicated to
4th Michigan Cavalry Regiment in recognition of their service during the
Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. This is one of two monuments to the 4th Michigan Cavalry on the battlefield. It marks their location on the morning of Sept. 18, 1863.

Text on the rear of the monument :
On the morning of Sept. 18, 1863, this Regiment with its brigade met the advance of Bushrod Johnson’s column on the east slope of Pea Vine Ridge successfully delaying for ten hours the crossing it Reed’s Bridge of a largely superior force of the enemy’s infantry and artillery thus materially contributing toward the defeat of the Confederates designed to crush the left wing of the Union Army. Sept. 19, guarded the movement of trains to Chattanooga. Sept. 20 successfully engaged the enemy at Red House Bridge on the Ringgold Road. On the 21st in 22d assisted in covering the movement of the Army to Chattanooga.

Short Physical Description
9' x 5' x 8', the rock-face monument of blue Westerly granite has a one-piece base and round-topped slab with a bronze base relief panel of soldiers at a bridge. Unit information is inscribed above the relief panel.
