Paul Cranfield Smyth was born in April 1883, the son of a school headmaster. He followed a career in teaching, with a passion for art. He was influential in the Hampstead Sketch Club and the Finchley Art Society, being founder and president of the society. He held several one man exhibitions and had a picture hung at the Royal Academy. For more biographical details see (visit link)

The painting is a watercolour. The thatched cottage to the left of the picture has been replaced by a modern block of flats. The pub has been extended to the right of the picture in recent times. The original façade of the pub is still visible, as is the house beyond and the boundary wall in the distance.
