George Washington was in Popes Creek Plantation on February 22, 1732. Early in his life he was a surveyor before becoming an officer during the French and Indian Wars. he married Martha Custis on January 6, 1759.
After the start of the American Revolutionary War he was appointed commander-in-chief of the Continental Army. He was a signer of the Declaration of Independence and and successfully defeated the British to gain independence for the American Colonies. Subsequently he was elected the first President of the United States. He served two four year terms before declining to run again. He died at his home in Mount Vernon, VA on December 14, 1799 at the age of 67.
After the death of George Washington in 1799 the Massachusetts Washington Monument Association commissioned a stature of the beloved first president. Since there were no qualified sculptors in America, in 1818 they commissioned Sir Francis Chantrey, of London to create a suitable memorial sculpture. In 1826, he completed a 88" by 26" by 34" marble sculpture of a standing George Washington.
The statue of Washington stands on a 6' high by 4' square marble base. Notably, Washington is depicted as a classical figure. He stands looking slightly towards his left with his left foot in front of his right, overhanging the marble plinth. He is wearing a toga and holding a scroll in his right hand while holding up the toga with his left hand. The face of Washington was modeled after a Gilbert Stuart portrait.
The statue was unveiled in Doric Hall of the Massachusetts State House in November, 1827. It was the first sculpture to be placed in the then new State House and the first full-sized marble statue in New England.
The Massachusetts State House is open to the public Monday through Friday from 10 am to 4 pm. All visitors must enter through the General Hooker entrance.
