Lake Valley Cemetery is all that remains of the Lake Valley community that once was here, although a sign at the cemetery gate indicates that the school was here, too. In "Bowie and Montague County", in the Images of America series, there is a photo of the Lake Valley Singing School class in 1912
This marker is made of stone, with the following inscription:
M.H.
Hemphill
Born Aug
The 18th 1836
& Died Jul
the 2nt [sic]
1897
The death year is hard to make out, but it appears to begin under the -h- and ends under the 2. There may have been another attempt at scratching the year into the stone, as there may be a "1" and an "8," maybe more, at the bottom left.
Note: This cemetery is on gas lease property. Please be careful around any livestock which are in the roads, and be certain to not block anybody's through access.
Date of Birth: 8/8/1836
Date of Death: 7/2/1897
