The plaque here reads:
"Japanese Friendship Garden
Lower Gate
Dedicated on May 11, 2004
The Japanese Friendship Garden Lower Gate is a
symbol of friendship gifted to the City of San Jose
by the citizens of Okayama, Japan. This gate is a
collaborative between San Jose and
the citizens of Okayama to commemorate
the 40th anniversary of the sister city relationship.
The gate symbolizes a lasting relationship between two
sister cities from across the seas."
The plaque also has the logo of the City of San Jose.
Interestingly, San Jose's Sister City webpage (
visit link) indicates that the relationship with Okayama was established in 1957...not 1964.
Perhaps the Gate was built in 1964 and they only got around to commemorating the event in 2004?
