The Windsor Jail was built in 1925, after fire destroyed the previous Essex County Gaol. The Windsor Jail is one of Ontario’s oldest correctional facilities.
The 35,000 square ft, three storey brick jail was designed to hold 197 inmates (187 male, 10 female) it is surrounded by a 20-foot cement wall. The prisoners were taken outside for fresh air in a small area (15' x 50') covered with fencing and barbed wire inside the wall.
The jail was constructed with built-in gallows in the third floor corridor, consisting of a trapdoor platform situated below a heavy iron ring that was anchored to the concrete ceiling. The trapdoor was opened by pulling a lever. Three men were executed at the Windsor Jail between 1933 and 1943. The last person sentenced to be executed was convicted of murder of a police officer August 23 1969. With the abolition of capital punishment on the horizon, his sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment.
Following the abolition of capital punishment (1976 in Canada), the trapdoor was welded shut.
The jail ceased operations on Aug. 25, 2014 when the last of its inmates were transferred to the new, state-of-the-art South West Detention Centre, also in Windsor.
