An inscription in Spanish reveals the gun was forged in 1783
Made for The Examinador and escribed on the end of the turret, saying this cannon may have once sailed the seas on that Spanish galleon.
I found this about the cannon, which is a local "mystery".
"The 1914 memorial is just east of the visitor center and near the Spanish Cannon “Examinador,” which was given to the city by the U.S. War Department. The cannon was supposed to be on display for a 1900 visit by Adm. George Dewey, but the city didn’t have money to construct a foundation. The cannon spent the Dewey festivities in the park’s police horse barn.
"Although it was quietly installed in 1901, it wasn’t until another Forest Park Forever volunteer, Fred Ruhrwien, researched the cannon that a marker was added to explain the copper weapon’s background." ~ St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Jane Henderson, August 24, 2014
