This monument west of Dunker Church is for the 125th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, a green unit that suddenly found itself in the middle of battle and sustained heavy casualties.

Near Sharpsburg, within the Antietam National Battlefield, is this monument to the 125th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry.

The monument is located about 300 ft west of the Dunker Church, which is at the intersection of Dunker Church Road and Smoketown Road.

The monument is made of Westerly granite at the top and Barre granite at the base. Bronze tablets are installed on two sides. At the top is a figure of a young soldier. His left arm encircles a flag, his right ready to pull out his sword. Just below his feet is the following (from the Smithsonian Inventory page):

"COLOR SERGEANT/GEORGE A. SIMPSON/KILLED AT ANTIETAM"

The bronze plaque has the following:

"125TH PENNSYLVANIA VOLUNTEER INFANTRY/1ST BRIGADE 1ST DIVISION 12TH CORPS/RECRUITED IN BLAIR HUNTINGTON AND CAMBRIA COUNTIES PENNA."

On the left side (facing the front) is an engraved star.

On the right side is a plaque with the following text:

"MOVED AT EARLY DAWN FROM BIVOUAC
ON FARM OF GEORGE LINE TO EAST WOODS
NEAR POINT WHERE GEN. J.K.F. MANSFIELD
WAS MORTALLY WOUNDED FROM THERE TO
SUPPOR T MONROE'S FIRST RHODE ISLAND
BATTERY ON SMOKETOWN ROAD THEN TO
WOODS THAT STOOD HERE SEPTEMBER 17
1862. WAS THE FIRST UNION REGIMENT
THEREIN BEING FAR ADVANCED AND WITHOUT
SUFFICIENT SUPPORT IT WAS OUTFLANKED BY
THE ENEMY AND RETIRED BEHIND BATTERIES
IN FIELD IN REAR AND SUBSEQUENTLY
SAVED THE GUNS OF MONROE'S BATTERY
FROM CAPTURE. REMAINED IN LINE UNTIL
CLOSE OF BATTLE MONUMENT IS NEAR
THE LEFT OF ITS MAIN LINE OF BATTLE.
