Dub zimní dosahuje výšky 20 až 40 metru a má vejcitou štíhlou korunu, která je méne rozvetvená než koruna dubu letního. Letorosty lysé, tmave olivove zelené, lenticely rídké, drobné. Pupeny vejcovité, až 8 mm dlouhé. Listy zretelne rapíkaté; cepel vetšinou široce obvejcitá, nejširší v horní polovine, až 16 cm dlouhá a 10 cm široká, na bázi klínovitá, ridceji zaokrouhlená, nahore široce zaokrouhlená, perenolalocná až perenodílná s 5–8 (–10) páry laloku, v horní cásti cepele s laloky mnohem melcími, tuhá, pomerne tenká, na líci lysá a slabe lesklá, na rubu svetlejší, drobnými 2–3 ramennými chlupy pýritá; bocních žilek 6–9 (–11) páru, žilky tretího rádu jen slabe patrné; rapík lysý, 12–30 mm dlouhý. Plody v paždí listu po (1–) 3 (–5), zpravidla prisedlé, zrídka na stopkách do 1,5 cm dlouhých, cíška tenkostenná, 6–12 cm vysoká, 8–14 široká, šupiny drobné, vejcite kopinaté, huste pýrité, ploché nebo jen slabe vyklenuté, nikdy hrbate ztlustlé; žaludy podlouhlé vejcovité, 14–25 mm dlouhé, 8–14 mm v prumeru, casto klící už na strome (Koblížek 1990). Žaludy jsou prisedlé k vetvím. Jeho lidový název je drnák.

Sessile oak reaches a height of 20-40 meters and has a slim egg-shaped crown that is less branched than oak crown. The shoots glabrous, dark olive green, sparse lenticels, small. Buds ovoid, up to 8 mm long. Leaves distinctly petiolate; blade usually broadly obovate, broadest in the upper half, to 16 cm long and 10 cm wide, based on wedge-shaped, rarely rounded, broadly rounded at the top, perenolalocná to perenodílná with 5-8 (-10) pairs of lobes, the upper part of the blade with lobes much shallower, stiff, relatively thin, bald on the obverse and slightly shiny, lighter beneath, 2-3 small boom hairs pubescent; lateral veins 6-9 (-11) pairs, veins third order only faintly visible; petiole glabrous, 12-30 mm long. Fruits in the axils of leaves after (1-) 3 (-5), usually sessile, rarely on the stems up to 1.5 cm long, thin cupule 6-12 cm high, 8-14 broad scales small, ovate-lanceolate, densely pubescent flat or slightly arched, never humped thickened; acorns elongated ovoid, 14-25 mm long, 8-14 mm in diameter, often germinate already on the tree (Koblížek 1990). Acorns are sessile on the branches. Its popular name is drnák.
