William Palmer Robins was born in Southwark in 1882, the son of an art teacher. He was encouraged in art by his father. He trained for two years in architecture in a firm owned by Professor Banister Fletcher, later moving on to the St Martins School of Art, where he stayed as an instructor for twenty years. He learnt the craft of etching under Sir Frank Short at the Royal College of Art. He became a member of the Royal Society of Painter Etchers in 1917. He exhibited in Venice, Florence, Paris, Zurich and Los Angeles.
