In Massachusetts Mount Auburn Cemetery was the first pastoral cemetery in the US. Hope Cemetery followed this design course. These type of cemeteries were typically located on elevated sites on the outskirts of a city, trying to achieve a naturalistic effect with graceful curving pathways and roads.
