78th Ohio Volunteer Infantry has this one regimental monument on the Vicksburg Battlefield.
The 78th Ohio Infantry was organized at Camp Gilbert in Zanesville, Ohio October 1861 through January 1862 and mustered in for three years service on January 11, 1862 under the command of Colonel Mortimer Dormer Leggett.
The regiment was attached to 2nd Brigade, 3rd Division, District of West Tennessee, to March 1862. 3rd Brigade, 3rd Division, Army of the Tennessee, to July 1862. Unattached, District of Jackson, Tennessee, to November 1862. 2nd Brigade, 3rd Division, Right Wing, XIII Corps, Department of the Tennessee, to December 1862. 2nd Brigade, 3rd Division, XVII Corps, Army of the Tennessee, to July 1865.
The 78th Ohio Infantry mustered out of service at Louisville, Kentucky on July 11, 1865.
This granite monument is located to the southeast of the John Logan Memorial. The upper section of the monument has the state seal centered on a palm frond. The background of this upper section is rough faced. The right and left side of the central section has a backpack and a bedroll. The front of the central section has a bas relief eagle with a circle of stars in the background. The eagle is perched on a shield where the inscription is carved. Flanking the shield is a sword and a musket. The state name "Ohio" is carved below the shield.

Short Physical Description
7'6" x 4'4" x 10', the 4-part monument consists of a 2-step, rock-faced base and a shaft with a raised shield giving unit designation; shield flanked by carved rifles and topped by eagle. Pediment-form capstone has state seal and branch.
