This simple bronze marker is located across Union Avenue near Battery De Golyer along what was the Union lines for the Siege of Vicksburg.

This metal marker is located across Union Avenue from Battery De Golyer. The marker has oak leaves, acorns, and ribbons around the edge. The State Name "Iowa" appears in a shield with leaves and berries on either side. The rest of the marker inscription reads:

5th INFANTRY
3d BRIG. 7TH DIV. 17TH CORPS
CAMP
MAY 20 - JUNE 22 1863

5th Iowa Infantry

"The 5th Regiment Iowa Volunteer Infantry was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War.

The 5th Iowa Infantry was organized at Burlington, Iowa and mustered into Federal forces on July 15, 1861. The regiment was amalgamated with the 5th Regiment Iowa Volunteer Cavalry on August 8, 1864.

Unit strength was 1067. The regiment suffered 9 officers and 108 enlisted men who were killed in action or who died of their wounds and 2 officers and 131 enlisted men who died of disease, for a total of 250 fatalities. 299 were wounded."
