The Planet Mercury
Mercury is the smallest and closest to the Sun of the eight planets in the Solar System,[a] with an orbital period of about 88 Earth days. Seen from Earth, it appears to move around its orbit in about 116 days, which is much faster than any other planet. It has no known natural satellites. The planet is named after the Roman deity Mercury, the messenger to the gods.

The Post Office
At the time these offices were built the Post Office held a monopoly position over communications in the UK. As well as delivering mail throughout the UK they also had a nationwide telecommunications network.

In 1846 the Electric Telegraph Company developed a nationwide communications network. Then in 1912, the General Post Office, a government department, became the monopoly telecoms supplier in GB. The Post Office Act of 1969 led to the GPO becoming a public corporation. In 1981 the corporation was split into two and British Telecommunications was formed to look after all aspects of telecommunications.

Mercury House
In the early 1970s when the newly formed public corporation of the GPO moved into the new building the title of Mercury House was a perfect name. Named after the Roman messenger god, it was perfect for a corporation with a communications monopoly.

The office block still retains its original name, but is currently empty after having being refurbished during 2014.
