"An avenue of trees leads from the monumental [church] to the National Monument to King Leopold I., an elaborate Gothic canopy and spire, covering a statue of the king. It is somewhat in the fashion of the Scott Monument in Edinburgh. An open colonnade behind is surmounted by Statues of the Nine Provinces of Belgium. It was finished in 1876."
