"Kostel sv. Štepána byl založen Karlem IV. soucasne s Novým Mestem v polovine 14. století, kdy plnil funkci farního kostela pro horní cást Nového Mesta pražského (pro dolní cást Nového Mesta plnil tuto funkci kostel sv. Jindricha). Kostel v dobe vzniku spravoval rád križovníku, když práve od krížovníku Karel IV. získal vetšinu pozemku pro založení Nového Mesta. Kostel se stavel v letech 1351-1401, kdy je jako hlavní stavitel zminován mistr Jirí."

The Church of St.Stephen was founded by Charles IV. simultaneously with the New Town in the mid-14th century, when served as a parish church for the upper part of the New Town of Prague (for the lower part of the New Town performs this function St. Henry). The church was built in the years 1351-1401, when it is mentioned as the main builder Mister George.
