Paul Cranfield Smyth was born in April 1883, the son of a school headmaster. He followed a career in teaching, with a passion for art. He was influential in the Hampstead Sketch Club and the Finchley Art Society, being founder and president of the society. The painting is a watercolour painted in 1950. The artist would have painted from the opposite side of the street, sufficiently far down to get a clear view of Fishmarket St to the left.
