website I located to describe the history of this lookout and reads:
Manzanita Lookout
Elevation: 7036
Height from ground to live-in tower: 10ft.
Established: 1930s
Torn down: 1966
Tower rebuilt by California Department of Forestry (CalFire) in 1974.
Staffed by the Forest Service since 1992.
Fire lookout ownership transferred back to Forest Service in 2002.
Remodeled: 2004

Manzanita Lookout is located within the Big Valley Ranger District, approximately 21 miles north of Adin, California. Legal description of this location is Township 40 North, Range 10 East, Section 26, M.D.M. The first 8.5 miles are paved highway and the remaining 11 miles are graveled roads. If traveling from Adin, travel north on state Highway 299E, approximately 8 miles. Turn right on County Road 198 and drive approximately 1/2 mile. You will see a direction sign for Manzanita Lookout. Turn an immediate left on Forest Service Road number 40N22 and remain on the road for 10 miles. You will again see a direction sign for the lookout. Turn left on Forest Service Road number 40N18 and drive approximately 1/2 mile., then turn right. Follow this road through the gate for approximately 1/4 mile. It will terminate at the lookout tower.
