I recovered this U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey benchmark from 1934 in POOR condition. The disk was found laying on the ground next to the concrete post. This BM would now be considered DESTROYED based off the deterioration of this station. I wanted to take the disk home with me as a keepsake but placed it in the middle of a small cairn of rocks on top of the concrete post instead. This benchmark shows up on a topography map as 'BM 4871'. The NGS datasheet description and posted coordinates are adequate for recovery with the exception that this highway is now an old roadbed and has been replaced with a new highway to the south.

DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1934 7.7 MI NE FROM ALTURAS. 5.9 MILES NORTHEAST ALONG U.S. HIGHWAY 395 FROM THE HIGH SCHOOL AT ALTURAS, MODOC COUNTY, THENCE 1.8 MILES EAST ALONG THE HIGHWAY LEADING TO CEDARVILLE, ABOUT 1/8 MILE EAST OF A CURVE, AT THE TOP OF A GRADE, 39 FEET NORTH OF THE CENTERLINE OF THE HIGHWAY, AND IN LINE WITH THE RIGHT-OF-WAY FENCE. A STANDARD DISK, STAMPED L 158 1934 AND SET IN THE TOP OF A CONCRETE POST.
