The Biography website tells us (briefly) about Jomo Kenyatta:
As the first leader of a unified, independent Kenya, Jomo Kenyatta brought stability and economic growth to the former British colony.
Born in 1894, Kamau Ngengi took the name Kenyatta, which is Kikuyu for the fancy belt he wore, and Jomo ("burning spear"). He began a newspaper and protest movement that spent decades demanding an independent Kenya.
