EN:
Nicholas was born in Patara in the Roman province of Asia in the Christian Greek family. Normally, it is planned to happen between 280/286, but are given even earlier dates, the latest of which talks about the year 250. From that became the patron saint of fishermen and sailors, have been derived that could be originally a fisherman or sailor, but it is likely that his family engaged in fish trade. He was very pious and after his father's death had a legacy to give away to the poor. Some of them derive that at that time he was already valued priest or bishop. It is generally assumed that became bishop (or priest of the most important) in Myra (now Demre in Turkey) around the year 300 and at a very young age.

Nicholas is depicted as an elderly bishop with a beard; the East is shown bald. The most frequent attribute tends Nicholas carrying three golden balls on a book. This attribute is associated with the legend of a nobleman and his three daughters. Nicholas is dressed in a red cloak, the head tends to have a bishop's miter and crosier in hand.

In the Czech and Slovak nowadays when called. Santa Claus conditions also via Nicholas presented in the bishop dress with a long white beard and is accompanied by angels and devils. This group bypasses the night of 5 to 6 December. Angels with Nicolas distribute the gifts, devils take care of the symbolic "punishment" and "haunting" naughty children. Not always, however, Nicholas was accompanied by an angel and a devil. Another time he went with him to be a municipal policeman. Angel is the latest version of all shareholders. Overall, it is a sort of Santa Claus preparing for Christmas, when to give away too valuable and lasting gifts, but rather just some treats or small gifts for good luck, but at the time of this habit which comes at a time when they were similar goodies and some fruits less available, this was valued more than today. At all times in this tradition, but it was mainly more on experience than on gifts.
