This station is on the Maryland side of the Potomac River, a shallow and slow moving stream passing by a feature known as Point of Rocks.

By Point of Rocks, next to a bridge of the Potomac River, is this stream gauge station for the USGS.
To get a place where you can observe the station, just before crossing over to Virginia, take a left onto Clay Street, then follow the signs for the C&O Canal. The parking lot for this is a short distance and over a set of railroad tracks.
The gauge is within a tower of concrete, next to the bridge that transports US 15 over the Potomac River. Not much is visible on the exterior. Near the top of this structure, there is a metal walkway connecting to the bridge. However, there is nowhere to park on the bridge.
The river, mile 159.5, is wide and shallow here as it passes through a ridge. The end of the ridge on the north side is known as Point of Rocks and is where the old Chesapeake and Ohio Canal passed by and the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad (now CSX) passes by and through, today. Two parameters are available from the web site: Gage Height and Discharge (Flow). Online information is available from 2007, but records exist as far back as 1895.
