The Parish Church of St.Peter and St.Paul in West Mersea is Grade I listed. It is of conventional layout of west tower, nave, a chancel at a lower level, south aisle and north porch.

The church is built of a mixture of materials, both new and recycled, Roman bricks and tiles have been incorporated at various points. The north porch is a C15th build, it has angle buttresses and a hipped roof with embattled brick pediments. The door into the nave is four-centered, there are two-centered windows in both east and west walls, and a decorated-type arch at the north side. Above this door is a niche with a small statue of St.Peter the Fisherman, placed here in 1986.

On the east wall of the porch above the window and on the roof line is this small gargoyle, no longer in use, depicting a humanoid head with a head of curly hair. The old roof line is marked with a cavetto string course with lead capping.
