The Parish Church of St.Peter and St.Paul in West Mersea is Grade I listed. It is of conventional layout of west tower, nave, a chancel at a lower level, south aisle and north porch.

The tower of the Saxo/Norman overlap, C11th, of three stages. The C17th embattled parapet is built of septaria, laid diagonally, in alternating directions. The lower tower has red brick quoins, some Roman bricks and tiles from the Roman villa which stood near the site. There are C11th windows in the north and south walls of the ground storey, the interior C11th western arch is plain with three corbelled stones at each impost. The west window is C16th, with two round headed lights beneath four which were formerly cinquefoiled, (cut back to round heads). The second storey has a circular opening in the west wall, the bell-stage has a C14th window in each wall, all of two cinquefoiled lights, one transom, and two centred heads. The heavily beamed floors inside the tower have been dated as early as the tower itself with very early examples of joinery.

The Mersea Smack weather vane was installed on the Tower in 1985. It was designed by Hervey Benham and built by Stanley Hills.
