Beechworth Gaol as it became known was opened 1860 with cells for 36 prisoners. It became a medium security prison, and then decommissioned in 2004 (Wiki).

The old HM Prison Beechworth was built at a cost of 47,000 pounds between 1859 and 1864 using granite from the onsite quarry. With the accommodation being doubled on completion.
Ned Kelly served six months in here in 1870, with his mother served time in here in the late 1870s.
It is now a correctional / rehabilitation centre
