Just after the Second World War, the sand contained in the basement of the Grande Prairie is operated here and there for the sake of the recontruction. Dug holes gradually fill with water.

In the years 1972-1973, the state acquires an area of ??55 hectares along the Charente in order to extract the materials needed to build remplaiement deviation of the N10.
After operating sand and gravel pits in 1975 phase, a part of the land is submerged and represents a real opportunity to develop a user-friendly space around a body of water. For this purpose, 3 towns are grouped into inter-union: Angouleme and Gond Pontouvre Saint Yrieix.
To ensure greater consistency in the development of the sports center, recreational and environmental District, now the Community of Agglomeration of Greater Angoulême and the General Council of Charente partner to manage the Water Plan in 1991.

Juste après la seconde guerre mondiale, la sable contenu dans le sous-sol de la Grande Prairie est exploité ça et là pour les besoins de la recontruction. Les trous creusés se remplissent progressivement d’eau.
En 1965, la Fédération Charentaise des oeuvres Laïques crée un premier club de voile sur ces étangs.
Dans les années 1972-1973, l’Etat acquiert une zone de 55 hectares le long de la Charente dans le but d’extraire les matériaux de remplaiement nécessaires à la construction de la déviation de la Nationale 10.
Après cette phase d’exploitation des sabliéres et des gravières en 1975, une partie des terrains est immergée et constitue une véritable opportunité pour aménager un espace convivial autour d’un Plan d’eau. Dans ce but, 3 communes se regroupent en syndicat intercommunal : Angoulême, Gond Pontouvre et Saint Yrieix.
Pour assurer une meilleur cohérence dans le développement de ce pôle sportif, ludique et environnemental, le District, devenu depuis la Communauté d’Agglomération du Grand Angoulême et le Conseil général de la Charente s’associent pour gérer le Plan d’Eau en 1991.
