Battery Walcott
This large battery on the east side of the fort was built during the Spanish-American war. It was named in honor of Col. William Walcott, who served during the Civil War. The battery operated into WWII. By late 1942, with the fading threat of the coastal invasion, battery Walcott was declared surplus and its guns removed. It is a twin to battery Barton, located west of the fort.
Battery Gaston
This battery is a small emplacement located between Battery Walcott and the stone fort. It was named in honor of second Lieutenant William Gaston , of the first U.S. Dragoons. Lt. Gaston was killed in action May 1858 while fighting the Spokane Indians on the Snake River, Washington Territory. This battery was equipped with rapid-fire guns to defend harbor mine fields.
These batteries are examples of the Endicott Taft Era (1899-1916) coastal defense installations.

But a photo of you standing next to the marker or a photograph the subject of the marker - those are examples of possible photographs to upload.
