This fountain is located on the square in front of the city hall of Freiburg. It has an octagonal basin from red sandstone and a large rectangular column in the center with a statue of Berthold Schwarz on top.

It was erected in 1855 on occasion on the 500th anniversary of the invention of the gunpowder and the cannon by Berthold Schwarz, who was a Gray Friar in Freiburg. But his historic existence is doubted.

The statue is the best-known piece of the artist Josef Alois Knittel (1814-1875).
