Berthold Schwarz was Gray Friar in Freiburg, in the conventual church in the background of the statue. He also worked as an alchemist and is said to have invented gunpowder and the cannon in the 1350s. Little else is known about this person, even his historic existence is doubted.

The statue is located on an octagonal fountain on the town hall square in Freiburg. It was erected in 1855 on occasion on the 500th anniversary of the invention. the statue is the best-known piece of the artist Josef Alois Knittel (1814-1875).
