The church st Martin in located in the historic town center of Freiburg, near the city hall.
It was built by the Franciscan Order in the second half of the 13th century as a conventual church. It was extended and modernized many times through the centuries. It was damaged and had to be repaired after the Thirty Years War. In the 19th century the Baroque additions were removed and it was reconverted to a former state. It was hit by a bomb in World War I and on November 27, 1944 it was almost completely destroyed by a British bomb raid.
From 1949 to 1951 the church was rebuilt. In 2009 it was taken over by the Dominican Order.
