The University Memorial Center became the first building on the University of Colorado Campus to become LEED certified in 2006.

The plaque below the LEED certification says, "In 2006, the UMC became the first LEED-EB certified building on the CU-Boulder Campus. The U.S. Green Building Council awarded the LEED-EB certification based on the UMC's 2002 renovation, which incorporated sustainable design materials, renewable energy sources, an an 89% recycling diversion rate. The UMC also implemented environmentally friendly cleaning practices and energy conservation programs to help in securing the LEED-EB certification. As the center of student life on campus, the UMC is prod the reflect the "green values and environmental concerns of the CU students."
