St. Marys Column was produced from donations from Trier citizens, and was dedicated in 1866 co commemorate the declaration by the Catholic Church of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception. It is an impressive white column, topped with a depiction of St. Mary, with a crown about her head. It is located on the highest point of the sandstone cliffs on the west side of the Moselle River. St. Mary stands upon a column that is 40 m (about 130 feet) tall and she gazes upon Trier, the oldest city in Germany.
At night, the column is lite by bright floodlights, providing a local landmark and a great photo opportunity.
There are narrow, winding streets leading to St. Mary's column, therefore it is not recommended to attempt to bring coaches/buses to this location. Private car or a long hike on foot are better options.
