Friedrich Weinwurm - Bratislava
On walks in streets of Bratislava downtown I spotted my first Stolperstein in Bratislava - and here is first waymark in this honorable category in Slovakia.
In front of the appartment house on Gorkého street, it commemorates Friedrich Weinwurm (30 August 1885, Borský Mikuláš – 1942) - Slovak architect and key figure of Slovak modernist architecture.
The Nová Doba Estate in Bratislava is one of most known examples of his projects.
After 80 years, Nová Doba still offers excellent level of housing and living.
Friedrich Weinwurm’s proffesional carier has been suddenly interrupted just before beginning of WWII, when he was forced to close his architect studion Weinwurm-Vécsei.
In 1941 he was imprisoned in Ilava and died under unexplained circumstances, probably in 1942 while attempting to escape across borders from Slovakia under Nazi occupation.
