THE CHURCH: The cornerstone of this cathedral was laid on 7 May 1613 by the Jesuits of Belgium, under contractor Ulrich Job, from Lucerne. The church was consecrated and dedicated on 17 October 1621 to the Immaculate Conception by auxiliary bishop Georg von Helfenstein. The German sculptor Daniel Muller (died 1623) contributed to the artisitic appearance of the church. The architecture is a blend of late gothic with Renaissance elements and adornments. Many expansions and renovations have been completed on the church over the decades.
TOWERS AND STEEPLES: There are 3 towers on the cathedral. The west tower is the oldest and contains the bells and is the tower of the Jesuit church. During the 1935-38 renovation, the east and central towers were added. The central tower is the shortest of the three, and has the wide, pyramid shaped base that rises to a narrow copper-covered peak. The central tower is above the transept.
The original bells ( the Virgin Mary bell, the Willibrord bell, the Peter bell, and the Cunigunde bell) were destroyed in a fire (attributed to the construction crew). The fire started on on Good Friday, 5 April 1985 and destroyed the west tower and part of the roof. The damaged tower and roof was rebuilt by 17 October 1985.
