Ernest Edward Woodley was born to his bricklayer father, Edward Woodley, and his mother, Ellen Gertrude Woodley, in Reading, Berkshire, England on November 1, 1897. He was baptised at St. Mary's church in Reading on February 6, 1898. Ernest's first home was at 7 Elm Park Road, and by the age of 13 the family had moved to 43 Wilson Road. In 1911, Ernest, his parents, and his four siblings emigrated via Bristol, England to Quebec, Canada on the vessel
Royal George, and finally to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada on June 21, 1911. The family later moved to 2554 Shelbourne Street in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.
On March 17, 1915, at the age of 18, Ernest enlisted in the Canadian army at Esquimalt and was assigned as a Private to the Royal Canadian Regiment with the regimental number 478937. At the time of his enlistment, Ernest was recorded as being 5 feet, 5 inches tall, having a chest measurement of 33 inches, and having a trade of plumber. Ernest reattested on March 1, 1916, but it's unclear if he ever saw combat in World War I or any other conflict.
Nothing more can be found regarding the remainder of Ernest's life until his death on January 22, 2000 at the age of 102, after which he was buried in the westernmost section of the Esquimalt Veterans Cemetery among fellow soldiers, pilots, and sailors. His wife, Alice, was later buried in the same plot after she died on December 23, 2012 at the age of 97.
